7 Signs You May Need Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Wisdom teeth - also known as third molars - are the last set of teeth to emerge, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people have no issues when these teeth come through, for many others, wisdom teeth can cause discomfort, infection, and even damage to neighbouring teeth. Knowing the early signs that your wisdom teeth might need removal can help prevent further complications and ensure you get the right care promptly.

At Skye Dental, we help patients across Brisbane manage wisdom tooth concerns with expert care and modern dental technology. Below are seven common signs that may indicate it’s time to have your wisdom teeth assessed, and possibly removed.

1. Persistent Pain or Discomfort at the Back of the Mouth

A common early warning sign is ongoing pain or a dull ache at the very back of your mouth, near where the wisdom teeth erupt. This discomfort may be caused by the teeth pushing against surrounding molars or by impaction, when a tooth doesn’t have enough room to emerge fully.

Pain can be constant or triggered when chewing. If you’re feeling consistent discomfort in this area, it’s best to have it evaluated by a dentist.

2. Swelling Around the Jaw or Gums

Swelling, tenderness, or redness in the gums near your back molars can indicate inflammation or infection. Wisdom teeth can cause swelling either when erupting through the gums or when trapped under them. In some cases, the surrounding tissue becomes inflamed, leading to pericoronitis, an infection of the gum flap that often forms over a partially erupted tooth.

You may also notice puffiness in your cheeks or jaw, particularly on one side.

3. Difficulty Opening Your Mouth or Jaw Stiffness

As wisdom teeth attempt to emerge, they can cause tension in the jaw and surrounding muscles. This may make it difficult to fully open your mouth or cause stiffness when eating, yawning, or speaking. Inflammation from infection or impaction often contributes to this limited movement and can worsen without treatment.

4. Red or Bleeding Gums Near the Back Molars

If your gums appear red or bleed easily, especially while brushing near the back of your mouth, this may be due to irritation from emerging wisdom teeth. Inadequate cleaning around partially erupted teeth allows bacteria and food particles to accumulate, increasing the risk of gum disease and infection.

Bleeding, especially if accompanied by swelling or pus, is a sign to book a dental appointment as soon as possible.

5. Bad Breath or an Unpleasant Taste in the Mouth

Food and bacteria trapped around wisdom teeth can lead to persistent bad breath or a foul taste that doesn’t go away with regular brushing. This is often caused by infection or decay in hard-to-reach areas. Infected or partially erupted wisdom teeth are difficult to clean properly, making them a common source of unpleasant odours.

6. Headaches or Earaches

Although it might not be obvious at first, wisdom tooth pain can radiate to nearby areas such as the ears, neck, or temples. This referred pain is due to the shared nerve pathways and muscle tension caused by inflammation or jaw misalignment.

If you’re experiencing recurring headaches or a dull ache in the jaw and ear region - especially on one side - your wisdom teeth may be the culprit.

7. Crowding or Shifting Teeth

As wisdom teeth try to push through, they can press against adjacent teeth, causing them to shift or become misaligned. This is particularly concerning for those who have had orthodontic treatment in the past. Even if your wisdom teeth aren't causing pain, they can silently undo years of orthodontic work or cause future bite problems.

Regular dental check-ups can help monitor any changes in alignment or early signs of pressure.

When to See a Dentist

If you notice one or more of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to book a consultation with your dentist. At Skye Dental, we use advanced imaging and diagnostic tools to assess whether your wisdom teeth are coming in normally or if they pose a risk to your oral health.

Sometimes wisdom teeth need to be removed even before symptoms appear, especially if X-rays reveal impaction or potential damage to nearby structures. Early intervention often leads to a smoother recovery and fewer complications.
